ANNUAL REPORT χίχ 10 FINANCE The Block Grant from the Court of the University amounted to £654 550 compared with £590 000 in the previous year In addition supplementary grants for salaries were received totalling £104 900 Fee Income was £112 600 compared with £112 400 last year The total income from Donations for the year was £52 800 As in previous years these Donations were received from Government Departments private firms and various foundations and were expended on materials and on the salaries of the research workers employed Last year the comparable figure was £38 100 Departmental expenses increased from £549 200 last year to £635 600 in the present year This figure included the cost of salaries and superannuation of the academic library technical and clerical staff of the College as well as expenditure on departmental and laboratory maintenance and library costs Maintenance of Premises showed an increase of only £1 200-from £141 900 to £143 100 This total included increases for the wages of the Maintenance Staff but the College paid less for the rents of various buildings as their freehold has been acquired through capital grants The total expenditure for the year was £934 000 and the total income was £944 200 showing surplus of £10 200 on the year's working Both the men's hostels as usual since the war were full throughout the session King's College Hall showed small surplus of £600 and Halli- day Hall surplus of £2 200 owing exclusively to the excellent vacation lettings secured These surpluses have been carried to the College General Income and Expenditure Account It should be remembered that on the instructions of the University Grants Committee several items of hostel expenditure rates external repairs maintenance of grounds are chargeable directly to College expenditure During the year 1959-60 capital grants totalling £137 469 were made available to the College by the University Grants Committee through the Court of the University of this £125 866 was for the acquisition of freehold and leasehold property £10 354 for constructional work and £1 249 for furniture and equipment 11 BENEFACTIONS AND GRANTS FOR RESEARCH The Agricultural Research Council renewed for one year their grant of up to £618 in aid of Professor Bennet-Clark's research in the depart- ment of Botany into amino-acid biosynthesis in plants in the depart- ment of Zoology the Council extended their grant in aid of Dr Dawes's research assistant and they awarded grant to Dr Arthur in aid of his research into arthropod-borne diseases Albright and Wilson Ltd offered grant of £400 for two years to support research student in the department of Chemistry The British Electrical and Allied Industries Research Association
