XV111 ANNUAL REPORT collection was the bequest of 172 volumes and nine pamphlets mainly in the field of Semitics and Old Testament studies by the late Mr Arnold Danvers Power Life Governor and Fellow of the College Other gifts worth special mention were £50 from the Spalding Trust to be spent on books on world religions 114 volumes in the field of Ger- manic studies from the library of the late Professor Ε Butler given by Miss Horner collection of thirty-one volumes of translations of the Odyssey and nine volumes of related interest from Dr Reginald Child an Associate of the College and the gift by Mrs Peter Foote of dozen letters from Professor James Fitzmaurice-Kelly one-time professor of Spanish at King's to her grandfather David Hannay which form particularly welcome addition to the collection of books and papers relating to the history of the College which is being built up by the Librarian Discussions took place with the University Library and the Institute of Historical Research to formulate policy for accessions in the field of Ecclesiastical History it is envisaged that the College Library will maintain library in this subject covering all needs for undergraduate study and assume responsibility for the provision of research material in patristics and in the church history of the Reformation scheme of subject specialization by senior members of the Library staff was introduced at the beginning of the year Each graduate member of staff is now responsible for all aspects of the administration of the libraries in particular group of subjects as far as possible those in which the individual has either academic qualifications or previous library experience and there is good reason to believe that this innova- tion has facilitated closer liaison between the College Library and the academic departments it serves At the same time the Library's budget was reorganized chiefly by the surrender by departments of the unexpended balance of their allocation for the purchase of books in their subjects at the end of each session thus allowing generous supple- mentary allocations to be made during the year to departments needing them The disadvantage inherent in the present fragmentation of the Library's resources in isolated departmental collections that readers cannot readily become aware of books of interest to them which are shelved in subject libraries other than their own is being overcome by the establishment in the General Library of subject catalogue covering the working collections in all subjects and by the display there of all new accessions irrespective of the part of the Library for which they are destined The Library Committee was concerned with the problem of providing reading facilities for students in the evenings It was possible to keep the Laws library open until during the Easter term and plans were made for the General Library and certain outlying libraries to be kept open until 45 in term in the session 1960-61
