XVI ANNUAL REPORT hamsters rats rabbits guinea-pigs etc while good in quality is utterly inadequate for the demands made upon it It would be most desirable that Botany and Zoology should be in close association and new subjects in the biological field such as cell physiology plant biochemistry developments in pharmacology and so on are arising which would be most conveniently and usefully brought together in biological centre Many attempts have been made to find site for this development but all have failed until this year the London County Council which has been most helpful and co-operative throughout has given permission for change of user of several private houses adjacent to 68 Half Moon Lane where proper labora- tories could be built for Botany and Zoology with provision for garden and adequate animal accommodation for other departments The University Grants Committee has throughout encouraged this develop- ment and it is hoped that satisfactory agreement will soon be made with the Camberwell and Dulwich College authorities so that com- mencement may be made on the buildings which the Botany and Zoology departments so badly need and which they have so long been denied Drury Lane When Professor Randall became Wheatstone Professor thirteen years ago he brought to the Physics department new interest in Bio- physics Winning the support of the Medical Research Council he persuaded it to establish Biophysics Unit in his department which grew rapidly under his enthusiastic leadership and has now established world-wide reputation His far-sighted and successful schemes of research quickly won for the Unit munificent support from the Rocke- feller Foundation the Nuffield Trust the British Empire Cancer Cam- paign and other bodies and attracted to its laboratories senior scholars from all over the world The Unit had long since become too large to be suitably housed in the Wheatstone laboratories in the Physics department and various elforts had been made to find adequate accom- modation for it outside but near the College Fortunately in the early months of this year building was discovered in Drury Lane which it was believed could be adapted for this purpose Munificent gifts from the Wellcome Trust and the generous support of the Uni- versity Court enabled this property to be acquired on lease from the Mercers' Company The Medical Research Council made very generous grant towards the conversion of the building into modern laboratory but very large sum will be required to complete the work It is hoped that the University Court will be able to supply this The College had already intimated to the University its resolve to establish an independent department of Biophysics in the Faculty of Science with Professor Randall as the first holder of the new Chair begin- ning has already been made in the formation of this department by the appointment of two lecturers an honorary lecturer and demonstrator
