xiv ANNUAL REPORT The Rabbeth Scholarship was awarded to Mr Carlyle Physio- logy The College Scholarships in Physiology were awarded to Mr Araba and Mr Ε Bozman The Warneford First Year Medical Scholarship was awarded to Mr Evans NUMBER OF FULL-TIME STUDENTS The number of full-time undergraduate students in the College was as follows in the Faculty of Arts 503 519 in the Faculty of Natural Science 478 471 in the Faculty of Medical Science 323 324 in the Faculty of Engineering 212 213 in the Faculty of Laws 171 170 and in the Faculty of Theology 307 289 of whom 116 112 were taking course for the degree and the remainder course for diploma or certificate In the six faculties there were thus 1994 1986 full-time undergraduate day students In addition there were 67 83 part-time undergraduate students 11 in the Faculty of Arts and 64 70 in the Faculty of Laws there were also 312 293 students of whom 204 191 were full-time and 81 81 part-time taking course for higher degree or diploma and 27 21 undertaking independent research 94 87 were taking full- time course for the University Postgraduate Certificate in Education There were 21 17 occasional students In the Faculty of Theology there were postgraduate students and 18 10 occasional students THE PROBLEM OF ACCOMMODATION The Strand Site Ever since its foundation King's College has had difficulty because of the restricted site in the Strand and this difficulty has been aggravated in recent years by the inevitable developments in scientific and techno- logical subjects The quadrilateral bounded by Somerset House the Strand Surrey Street and the Embankment had already been zoned by the London County Council for university development but in its recently published map the Planning Authority proposes now to designate the area which considerably advances our hopes that the College will before long be able to start its long-awaited rebuilding programme Over the years the College has been acquiring the freeholds or lease- holds of properties within the scheduled area and now only few remain outstanding Public Enquiry at which objections to the proposed development could be heard was held on October 20th 1960 by the Ministry concerned and the College hopes that the objections have been overcome and that it will be possible to start rebuilding during the The numbers in square brackets are those of the previous year
