OF THE COUNCIL As Dean of King's College Canon Abbott has added strength and distinction to the exacting office he was called to fill Sensitive to the peculiarities of the dual constitution of the College he has worked in harmony and accord not only with the Governing Bodies and with two Principals but both within and without the frame- work of the whole College society And his colleagues both secular and ecclesiastical have had for him at once respect an affection and an esteem for he has communicated to others that inner force which has made him unsparing of self to the common good He leaves London to take up his duties as Warden of Keble College Oxford For his new life and his new responsibilities the Council wish him God-speed confident and sincere in the knowledge that at Keble as at King's he will be strengthened and sustained to do that which is commanded of him At the same meeting the Chairman expressed the welcome of the Council to the Dean-elect the Reverend Evans who had been appointed at special meeting of the Council in September The new University Professor of the History and Philosophy of Religion Professor Lewis has made the College his centre and has become in short time valued member of the Senior Common Room His lectures have been appreciated by the students and his advice on the Professorial Board which he attends by invitation has been more than welcome In response to his request for further assistance the University has taken the unusual step of appointing Lecturer to work with him Mr Ninian Smart is leaving the University College at Aberystwyth to join Professor Lewis in London and the Council will give him hospitality within the College The Reverend Green who has been giving part-time help during the year under review has been appointed by the Council to full-time lectureship from October 1956 He will reside at the Hostel where third member of staff is needed As the year ended the Council lost the services of Miss Beryl Wilkinson who since the war has been tireless assistant in the women's depart- ment and many of the men students owe their success in passing Greek examinations to her painstaking tuition The Council expressed its warm appreciation of her devoted work and the hope that her years of retirement would be happy years The Reverend Pickering has completed his three years of research as the Cleave-Cockerill Student and the Department will be withoiit his help as Tutor At the close of the session the Council received with regret the news that Mr Harley who had been appointed to the College Office in 1911 and had been promoted Accountant in 1919 was retiring on July 3lst The following Minute was entered in the records and copy sent to Mr Harley
