ANNUAL REPORT The department also shared in the teaching of 150 students reading for the Sc Econ degree with Special Geography and the supervision of 30 research students at the London School of Economics First Degrees Honours 2nd Class Upper Division 2nd Class Lower Division 11 Sc Special 1st Class 2nd Class Upper Division 2nd Class Lower Division Higher Degrees Sc with Distinction Miss Joyce Brown The sub- glacial surface in East Hertfordshire and its relation to the valley pattern Sc Smith "The Vale of the White Horse area regional study with special reference to settlement Departmental Notes The teaching resources of the department were again at maximum stretch In reckoning the total of work account must be taken of the assistance given by King's College staff in teaching undergraduates and research students registered at the London School of Economics as noted above In these circumstances the department warmly welcomes the appointment of Dr Pugh from University College Ibadan as Reader in the department He will greatly increase both its teaching strength and its research potential The first-year field-class was again conducted at St Boniface College Warminster The second-year Arts and Science students together with large party of Economics students visited Exeter The third-year field-class was conducted in Germany by Messrs Elkins and Yates In this extension of field-work to extra-British areas we are following the example of most of the Honours Schools of Geography in this country and it is hoped to continue the policy of holding one field-class abroad during each 3-year course Apart from the special technical attractions visit to continental Europe has many more general educational advantages Miss Coleman is maintaining series of vacation visits to various parts of Europe Although these are not compulsory field-classes in the formal sense they are very welcome supplement to the general training given by the department
