XXX ANNUAL REPORT During the summer months field-work courses were organised by and for students in the Department at Flatford Mill for biologists and in the Isle of Wight for geographers Professor Α Judges as Chairman of the Standing Conference on Studies in Education presided over the annual meetings of the Con- ference at King College in December 1956 He presided over the section of the Central Advisory Council for Education which is investi- gating the opportunities for the further education of secondary-modern school-leavers He was one of the University of London representatives at the Inter-University Conference in December He lectured in courses and week-end schools organised by the Department of Education in the University of Reading and the Institutes of Education at Hull and Leicester He also addressed Essex teachers and presided at an anni- versary meeting of Principals of Church of England training colleges and others at Whitelands College in June He took the chair at con- ference in March between members of the teaching staff of King College and the heads of Middlesex Grammar Schools on the subject of University entrance requirements Mr Beales gave the Jubilee Lecture on Eifty years of the teaching of History to the Historical Association Congress in January He addressed the London Head Teachers' Association and lectured in the Universities of Leeds and Exeter Mr Beales and Mr Brown gave courses of lectures at St Mary's College Twickenham and at the Physical Training College Dartford Dr King spent the Spring semester of 1956 at Memphis State College Tennessee as Visiting Professor of Comparative Education under the terms of the John Hay Whitney Fellowship and the Fulbright scheme He lectured at the South-Western University Vanderbilt University George Peabody College the University of Tennessee and San Bernardino Valley College He has been making special study of social change in relation to the segregation issue in education and also of adult education DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY Number of Students General Sc General Ancillary Geography 10 Honours Registered at 33 Registered at 17 Sc Special 30 Research Total 95
