XX ANNUAL REPORT fencers of international repute film was taken of the Gala and later televised The generous hospitality of other Unions in the University was repaid at the Duke of Wellington Ball held at the end of the Lent Term The Union Society was happy to entertain many members of the academic staff as well as undergraduate representatives and it was felicitous occasion for the traditional handing over ceremony to the new Union Society officers Speakers from the College have debated in all the larger London Colleges and in many of the provincial Universities The Inter-Faculty Debating Competition was won for the first time by the Faculty of Medicine in the Final of the Intercollegiate Competition the College lost by narrow margin for the second year in succession The Union Society gave Dinner in honour of the retiring Dean of Ring's College Canon Abbott and the President held reception for his successor the Reverend Evans In sport the year has been very successful The Commemoration Games were narrowly lost but this result was reversed in the Foundation Games University Cups have been won for Cricket Association Foot- ball and Women's Hockey Mitcham Day now firmly established with cricket match between the Principal's XI and the President's XI and very popular Tennis Tournament was again enjoyed by large number of people Some badly needed redecoration has been carried out in the Chesham and the bridge across Strand Lane has at last closely linked the College and the Union Society The Chesham is now open until 10 and the Bar until 45 Meals are served until in the Michaelmas and Lent Terms This late opening has proved social and financial success B-REPORTS OF DEPARTMENTS FACULTY OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS Number of Students General and Subsidiary Latin Greek Post-B General Honours Postgraduate 44 35 Total 97 For distinctions and appointments gained by staff and students see pp viii-xiv
