XV111 ANNUAL REPORT 162a Strand the building of the bridge between the College and the Chesham and the adaptation and furnishing of 22 Surrey Street are some of the items included in the above grants 11 benefactions and grants for research The Agricultural Research Council relinquished to the College the right to the apparatus worth several hundred pounds purchased from grant in aid of research on the secretion and accumulation mechanism in plants The Agricultural Research Council renewed grant in aid of research on the mechanism of the action of indolyl-acetic acid and related growth substances the grant not to exceed £466 The Agricultural Research Council renewed grant in aid of in- vestigations on the fate of indole-3-acetic acid and related substances in metabolism and growth the grant not to exceed £691 The Agricultural Research Council renewed by £628 for further thirteen and half months from April lst the grant first made in 1954 to the Zoology department The Asthma Research Council renewed for further year at the rate of £600 per annum the grant for the salary of research worker in the Department of Physiology In addition they granted an expense allowance of £100 for animals The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority extended for one year to September 1956 their grant for work under Professor Hey's direction in the Chemistry Department on interfacial turbulence The British Empire Cancer Campaign granted the sum of £5 482 for the continuation of research under Professor Randall's direction in the Physics Department £100 was left to the Department of Physiology by the will of the late Mr Cargill Fellow of King's College The Cassel Educational Trust awarded grant of £30 in aid of his research to Dr Ince The Central Research Fund awarded grant of £500 in aid of his research to Professor Price Douglas Ltd of Bristol presented to the College cylinder-head for petrol engine £300 was left by the will of the late Mrs Ε Harvey to the Civil Engineering branch of the College £1 000 was left by the will of the late Miss Gabrielle d'Hondt to supply the income for travel scholarship to student of the College so long as Mrs Rita Hamilton remains on the staff Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd made grant of £300 to be spent on equipment for Professor Kastner's research The Eli Lilly Co Ltd of Indianapolis awarded the sum of $2 250 for equipment for research in Biophysics The Nuffield Foundation made further grant £990 to cover the estimated increases in salaries of its workers in the Physics Department
