xiv ANNUAL REPORT The Daniell Research Scholarship was awarded to Miss Holmes The Scholarships in Physiology were awarded to Mr Anderson and Mr Letley NUMBER OF FULL-TIME STUDENTS The number of full-time undergraduate students in the College in the various faculties during the session was as follows in the Faculty of Arts 462 460 in the Faculty of Natural Science 420 408 in the Faculty of Medical Science 371 355 of whom 348 338 were taking course for degree and 23 17 the examinations of the Conjoint Board in the Faculty of Engineering 186 160 in the Faculty of Laws 146 137 and in the Faculty of Theology 268 259 of whom 91 80 were taking course for degree and the remainder course for diploma In the six faculties there were thus 1853 1779 full-time undergraduate day students In addition there were 76 84 part-time students taking course for first degree in the Faculty of Arts and 67 75 in the Faculty of Laws There were also 319 318 students of whom 222 202 were full- time and 97 116 part-time taking course for higher degree or diploma in one or other of the faculties and 24 24 undertaking inde- pendent research 79 76 were taking full-time course for the Uni- versity Postgraduate Certificate in Education There were also 19 24 occasional students STUDIES The following results were obtained at the Final Examinations In the Faculty of Arts students compared with last year -1 in English in Classics in French and in Spanish-were placed in the First Class In the Faculty of Natural Science 21 students compared with 26 last year -2 in Geography in Mathematics in Botany in Chemistry in Physics in Physiology and in Zoology-were placed in the First Class In the Faculty of Engineering students compared with last year were placed in the First Class The total number of students in all Faculties except that of Theology who were awarded First Class in Honours was 33 compared with 38 last year Though the College has long been very active in teaching and research both in English Language and in English Literature the English Depart- ment has been under strength on the Language side It was strongly desired that there should be Chair of English Language as well as one of English Literature but circumstances were never propitious It is therefore with very real pleasure that the College welcomes in his new academic status its former Reader in English Language and Literature The numbers in square brackets are those of the previous year
