OP THE COUNCIL 111 ing influence in the common life of the Hostel for four years left to be married and for the two ensuing terms the Dean as Warden of the Hostel and Mr Mandeville were the only two residents from the Staff The Chaplain came in regularly to help in the Chapel Services and to dine on Tuesdays But the pastoral work at the Hostel cannot thus be covered adequately and in due course particularly when the financial position is healthier better arrangement will have to be made The Finance Committee recommended to the Council that the Hostel Chapel should be re-seated in such way as to accommodate the full number of 72 students in accordance with the plans submitted by Mr Stephen Dykes-Bower and that the whole scheme of restoration and improvement should constitute the Memorial to the late Professor Rogers and be paid for from the legacy bequeathed to the Theological Department by him As the session ended the promise was given of the execution of this work during the long vacation The replace- ment of the temporary windows at the East End of the Hostel Chapel by permanent leaded lights in various pale shades of colour was first instalment of the total restoration of Chapel which was always re- cognised for its architectural merit for the skill of its design and for the devotional atmosphere which pervaded it The painting of all the public rooms at the Hostel and of the cor- ridors and staircases was planned for the long Vacation very expensive but inevitable undertaking Meanwhile Mr Martin the architect of the Hostel building was being asked to submit designs for garden wall in place of the lamentably untidy temporary palisading which has disfigured the front of the Hostel for the past five years The Society of Old Testament Studies held its Jubilee Meeting at the Hostel in January and the occasion was notable for the bringing together at the Jubilee Dinner of the Archbishop of Canterbury the Moderator of the Free Church Federal Council Monsignor Ronald Knox and the Chief Rabbi The Hostel continued to be exceptionally well-run by Miss Rollett and her faithful and efficient staff and large sum of money was received from vacation conferences while the raising of students1 fees to £105 per annum and the doubbng up of several rooms to bring the number of students to 72 has resulted in the first credit balance since the Hostel reopened after the war Warminster The fourth-year College at Warminster under the Wardenship of the Reverend Evans assisted by the Chaplain the Reverend Townroe consolidated its position was inspected by and obtained an excellent report and became widely-known throughout the Church as one of the outstanding experiments and achievements of the post-war years in the work of training men for the Ministry In this year the residents at Warminster represented the best of the post- war intake the growing-pains י of the College were over the men
