ANNUAL REPORT XXXV11 Ph Willis survey of the mechanical properties of rubber and an experimental investigation of the instability of hollow rubber cylinders subjected to axial loading Ph Young An investigation into the hydraulic resist- ance of packed towers operating with countercurrent gas and liquid flow Departmental Notes In addition to the work on the Quadrangle Laboratories which should provide much-needed expansion of the facilities in the Faculty the reconstruction of the Heat Engines Laboratory was begun This involved considerable disorganisation in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty records with gratitude the generous assistance of University College in providing facilities for laboratory courses in thermodynamics Professor Davies lectured at the Technische Hochschule Graz in July 1949 and at the Technische Hochschule Aachen in June 1950 Professor Greig represented the Institution of Electrical Engineers at the meeting of the International Electroteehnical Commission held in Paris in July 1950 The public lecture which Professor Greig gave in the College on November 14th 1949 to mark the centenary of the birth of John Hopkinson first Professor of Electrical Engineering at King's College was repeated in Paris later in the session In addition to public lectures delivered in the College Mr Nash lectured to the Institution of Civil Engineers Southern Associa- tion on Soil Mechanics Tests and their Applications C-PUBLIC LECTURES Michaelmas Term 1949 -Public Lectures delivered during this term were as follows Faculty of Arts La Conception et le Developpement du Roman- Fleuve depuis Balzac by Jules Romains Ideals of Conduct in Spanish Literature" by Dr Pastor Rui Barbosa 1849- 1923 by Mr Η Livermore Some Problems of Modern Greek Prose Writing by Professor Andre Mirambel The Origin of the Christian Turks in the Dobrudja by Professor Paul Wittek The Maritime Foundations of Imperial History by Professor Graham Education and Social Dynamics by Professor Α Judges Faculty of Engineering The Elements of Soil Mechanics in Theory and Practice by Mr Nash John Hopkinson 1849-1898 by Professor Greig Engineering Aspects of the Design of Electro- magnetic Accelerators for Charged Particles by Mr Η Taylour The figures in brackets indicate the number of lectures in course
