ANNUAL REPORT XXV Miss Marjorie Travis Dual System Reform in England and Wales 1941-44 Departmental Notes Further stages were accomplished in the construction of the area training organisation for the London region brought under the sur- veillance of the University by decision of the Senate in 1948 All members of the departmental staff have taken active parts in the work of the councils and committees set up under the scheme and some have done duty on official visitations to training colleges representative body of postgraduate students from King's College took part in the inaugural ceremony of the University of London Institute of Education over which the Chancellor of the University presided in December 1949 Members of the department took part in the teaching work of training colleges in the area Mr Beales and Mr Brown lecturing on the Principles of Education at St Mary's College Strawberry Hill and Dartford Physical Training College respectively in the Michaelmas and Lent Terms Miss Parish who after some years' work for the College as part-time supervisor became full-time member of the department in October 1949 has been given the status and title of Lecturer of the Institute The higher-degree work of the department which is carried on jointly by teachers of the Institute of Education and King's College has been re-organised on the new basis which was called for by the University's decision to institute new award in the form of an Academic Diploma in Education for advanced students Jointly with the Institute of Education the School of Oriental and African Studies and representative group from Oxford the Education Department took part in the organisation of number of Easter visits to study educational systems on the Continent The King's College parties were arranged by Dr Hans as in previous years Twenty- three King's College students participated in visits to Belgium the Netherlands Luxembourg France and Denmark Professor Judges presided at the Fifth Conference on the University Teaching of International Relations convened in January 1950 by the British Co-ordinating Committee for International Studies He was appointed member of the Publications Committee of the Royal Historical Society on retiring from the Finance Committee Dr Hans lectured on Russia to the Naval College at Southampton in November 1949 and on Comparative Education to the Institute of Education of the University of Utrecht in March 1950 he also gave lectures to international bodies of advanced students in London The Education Department has acquired voice-recording machine for vise in speech training and this is now being used under joint arrangements with the Theological Department The Education Society presented two highly successful performances of the play You Can't Take it with You a4
