xxii ANNUAL REPORT Results of Examinations Honours 2nd Class Upper Division 2nd Class Lower Division 3rd Class General and Subsidiary 16 Higher Degree with Distinction Salmon Belial an Edition with Commentary of the German version of Jaeobo de Theramo'8 Consolatio Peccatorum Departmental Notes Twenty students of the department were abroad either for term or vacation course at Austrian or German universities Mr Moss was awarded an Austrian Government Scholarship at the University of Vienna for the summer semester 1950 The King's College German Society gave public performances of George Biichner's Leonce und Lena on March 14th and 15th 1950 excerpts later being broadcast Work was almost completed during the year to provide further library in the department In future there will be two libraries one general and modern the other linguistic and mediaeval The mediaeval colloquium on heroic literature met throughout the session Its meetings were regularly attended by members of staff from Manchester University Nottingham University University College Leicester University College Southampton and the following colleges of the University of London Queen Mary College Royal Holloway College University College and Westfield College One meeting was arranged in conjunction with the London Mediaeval Society when Mr Arthur Waley read paper on Ainu Heroic Literature Professor Norman completed his fourth year as Dean of the Faculty of Arts in the University He also acted as Chairman of the Council of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies On three occasions he visited Germany on behalf of the Foreign Office German Section and he also visited fourteen German universities on behalf of the Vice- Chancellors' Committee in order to choose twelve one-year Fellows for English universities from the staff of German universities He is serving on committee of the Civil Service Commission which is charged with suggesting any necessary reforms in the examination for entry into the Administrative Class Dr Magill was appointed Secretary of the Conference of University Teachers of German He continued to act on the German Committee of the Modern Language Association and on the editorial staff of German Life and Letters He delivered public lectures on Austrian Comedy at University College and at Royal Holloway College
