ANNUAL REPORT xvii again great success The address at the Commemoration Service was given by the Rev Canon Raven Master of Christ's College Cambridge The Oration was delivered by Professor Gilbert Murray his subject being Things Permanent and Transitory The Ball was held at Claridge's Hotel The Drama Society presented Phoenix too Frequent by Christopher Fry and Murder in the Cathedral by Eliot The Music Society presented programme at the Festival of Music which included Acis and Galatea by Handel Haydn Symphony and Christmas Carols King's was again victorious in the Games against University College For the first time the Commemoration Supper and Dance was held outside the College an experiment prompted by the restricted accommodation in the College buildings The function took place at the Lyceum and was attended by over one thousand people The Principal's Cup was presented for the second year in succession to the Faculty of Arts In addition to the performances in Commemoration Week the One- Act Play Festival was again popular feature and College Revue was also ably produced The Music Society was responsible for number of concerts and broadcasts the Carol Service proving par- ticularly fine choral effort Debating in College maintained high standard and the Inter- collegiate Debating Cup was returned to King's Many successful debates were held during the session In sport the standard was higher than ever The Boat Club was markedly successful winning the Lorsignol Cup the Tweddle Trophy the Reeve Challenge Cup and the AUom Cup The Club also took part in the Henley Regatta The Women's Boats won the Head of the River race and the Senior Fours In Athletics the Rosebery Cup and the London Colleges Trophy were secured and also the De Beaumont Trophy for Fencing Eight members of the University team who won the English Universities' Rifle Cup were King's men and the Rugby Football Club reached the University final King's provided two members of the University Boxing team and in many other University teams the College was well represented B-REPORTS OF DEPARTMENTS FACULTY OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS Number of Students Honours 26 General 18 Subsidiary 16 Postgraduate Total 64 For Distinctions and Appointments gained by Staff and Students see pp vii-x a3
