xiv ANNUAL REPORT by students and there can be little doubt that the provision of these premises has given useful stimulus and vitality to corporate student life and has brought those belonging to different faculties into contact with each other in quite new way No 33 Surrey Street the acquisition of which was mentioned in the last Report was brought into use during the session and some addi- tional and much-needed accommodation for Geography will be available in 163a Strand at the beginning of the session 1950-51 During the session the Delegacy secured the leasehold of 161a and 166 Strand Existing tenancies however will prevent the effective using of any of the accommodation in these buildings before October 1951 Satisfactory progress has been made with the laboratories for Physics and Engineering which are replacing the quadrangle vaults and the quadrangle is no longer gaping void When dealing with the heating of this new building opportunity was taken to reorganise and improve the heating system of the College This was in fact necessary reform which was overdue It has one unfortunate drawback-the necessity of constructing large flue which regrettably reduces the floor area of series of rooms in each storey of the College building In the Department of Chemistry the stores have been reconstructed and extended with consequent gain in storage and office space and two laboratories are under reconstruction Of these the General Honours Laboratory will be in use during the Michaelmas Term 1950 but the Laboratory for Special Honours in Physical Chemistry will not be ready until January 1951 It is this laboratory which it is proposed to name in honour of Professor Allmand In the Department of Physiology room 23D previously used as store has been equipped as biochemical laboratory providing eight places for students reading for the Sc degree in Physiology and post- graduate degrees in Biochemistry Work has also started upon the reconstruction of the Heat Engines Laboratory This it may be remembered suffered as the result of direct hit from small bomb during the war and since then work has been carried on in it under the somewhat makeshift conditions which temporary roofing and repairs allowed The reconstruction will provide much improved accommodation and better access to the Department of Mechanical Engineering Of necessity the laboratory will be out of action during the session 1950-51 but this difficulty has been overcome thanks to the generosity of University College in coming to the aid of King's and offering the hospitality of its own laboratories and equip- ment For this help in need the Delegacy would wish to express their deep gratitude The former Montrose Court Hotel on the south side of Clapham Common to which the Delegacy have given the name of Halliday Hall will be opened as hostel for men students in the Michaelmas Term 1950 The hotel oanie into the possession of the College on January lst 1950 but for various reasons it was thought inexpedient to attempt to open it as hostel before October The Delegacy were
