annual REPORT xi NUMBER OF FULL-TIME STUDENTS The number of full-time undergraduate students in the College in the various Faculties during the session was as follows in the Faculty oi Arts 448 457 in the Faculty of Natural Science 388 332 in the Faculty of Medical Science 447 450 of whom 351 344 were taking course for degree and 96 106 the examinations of the Conjoint Board in the Faculty of Engineering 115 104 in the Faculty of Laws 99 99 and in the Faculty of Theology 249 251 of whom 93 99 were taking course for degree and the remainder course for diploma In the six Faculties there were thus 746 693 full-time undergraduate day students In addition there were 146 127 part-time students taking course for degree in the Faculty of Arts and 138 121 in the Faculty of Laws There were also 314 302 students of whom 186 169 were full- time and 128 133 part-time taking course for higher degree or diploma in one or other of the various Faculties and 17 undertaking independent research 74 88 were taking full-time course for the Teacher's Diploma There were also 90 179 occasional students attending lectures not leading to degree or diploma STUDIES The following results were obtained at the Final Examinations In the Faculty of Arts students compared with 18 last year in English in French in Spanish and in Geography-were placed in the First Class In the Faculty of Laws student compared with last year was placed in the First Class In the Faculty of Natural Science 12 students compared with 16 last year -1 in Physics in Chemistry in Botany in Geology in Physiology and in Mathematics-were placed in the First Class In the Faculty of Engineering 12 students compared with last year were placed in the First Class The total number of students in all Faculties except that of Theology who were awarded First Class in Honours was 32 compared with 39 last year As recorded in last year's Report University Inspection of the Faculties of Arts and Natural Science took place on March 17th and 18th 1949 The Inspectors' Reports of these two faculties have now been received The difficult problem of organising some machinery for securing the more adequate supervision of general honours students and closer integration of their studies is under consideration University Inspection of the Faculty of Medical Science took place on October 20th 1949 The Report of the Inspectors on the College faculty has been received but promised report upon the wider question of the organisation of medical studies in the University as whole is The numbers in square brackets are those 01 the previous year
