iv ANNUAL REPORT CHANGES IN THE STAFF Retirements By retirement the College has lost the services of Professor Allmand and Professor Denis Saurat In appreciation of the long and valued services which they have rendered to the College the Delegacy passed the following resolutions The Delegacy have learned with great regret of the retirement of Professor Allmand Sc Professor Allmand was appointed to the second Chair of Chemistry in the College in 1919 In 1938 he succeeded Professor Samuel Smiles as Daniell Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry In 1939 he was seconded for service with the Ministry of Supply and in 1944 became Superintendent at the Armaments Research Department He was released from war service and resumed his duties in the Daniell Chair in July 1945 He was made Fellow of the College in 1932 His distinction as scientific investigator and his devoted skill as teacher have brought credit to the College and have earned him the affectionate gratitude of generations of students In 1936 he succeeded Professor Atkins as Assistant Principal an office which he held until the evacuation of the College in 1939 He has served more than one term as representative of the Professorial Board on the Delegacy and he was for some years member of the Finance Committee where his sound judgment integrity and technical knowledge were of the greatest value His gifts of character have extended his personal influence upon the general life of the College beyond the limits of the Department of Chemistry and the Faculty of Science The Delegacy desire to express to Professor Allmand their gratitude for all that he has done for the College during the last thirty-one years and their best wishes for health and happiness in his retirement The Delegacy have learned with regret of the retirement of Pro- fessor Denis Saurat -6s-L who has held the Chair of French in the College since 1926 Until 1945 Professor Saurat was also Director of the Institut Fran9ais He was elected Fellow of the College in 1948 His many publications upon English literature both in French and English and his exceptional skill as an orator and lecturer in either language have brought distinction to the College while his sensitive interpretation of modern French authors has been appreciated alike by his students and by more public audiences Professor Saurat narrowly escaped with his life when his house suffered direct hit from German bomb and his health never com- pletely recovered from the shock of this experience Medical advice necessitated his migration to warmer climate and for nearly all of the last session he was on leave of absence In accepting his resignation at the age of sixty the Delegacy wish to express their regret at the cause of his early retirement their gratitude for his services to the College and their hopes for the speedy and complete recovery of his health
