154 FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCE BOTANY Head of the Department Professor Thomas Archibald Βεννετ-Clark Ph Sc Special Botany Students should consult the Head of the Department The course to be followed lasts three years and requires two ancillary subjects to be taken from the group Chemistry Zoology Physics Physiology but on account of difficulties of timetable and accommodation Physiology cannot be taken in this college with Botany At the present time two-year courses in Chemistry and Zoology are given to cover these requirements and similar course in Physics is available for suitably qualified students Candidates may be examined in one of the ancillary subjects at the end of the first year and in their second ancillary subject and also in Part Sc Special Botany at the end of their second year At the end of the third year candidates take Part Π of Sc Special Botany considerable measure of specialisation occurs in courses and examinations for Part II Lecture and laboratory courses will be given covering the fields of anatomy cytology and genetics general mycology and microbiology including some plant pathology physiology and biochemistry and ecological principles In addition series of inter- collegiate courses is organised by the Board of Studies in Botany Synopsis of Courses I-B Sc General and Subsidiary Zj-Lectures At least his throughout sessions The subjects treated are as follows -morphology and phylogeny of all the plant groups plant physiology and biochemistry cytology genetics classification and ecology of plants and their practical applications --Practical Class hrs throughout sessions II-B Sc Special Part -Two-year courses Lectures at least hrs Laboratory work hrs The courses cover the various aspects of Botany indicated in II above ΙΠ-B Sc Special Part II -One-year course Lectures will be given on plant physiology and biochemistry cytology genetics ecology mycology and bacterio- logy Laboratory work covering the above subjects and general plant anatomy and morphology will occupy at least 12 hours
