CLASSES 151 Second Session A5-Lectures Atomic Physics hrs -Lectures Thermodynamics and Elementary Statistical Mech- anics hrs A7-Lectures Optics and Advanced Electromagnetic Theory hrs A8-Lectures Properties of Matter hr -Lectures Electricity and Magnetism hr Third Session Aj0-Lectures Advanced Atomic Physics hrs -Lectures Modern General Physics hrs A12-Lectures Quantum Theory Wave Mechanics and Statistical Mechanics hrs A13-Lectures Modern Theory of Electricity hrs The course for the Sc Special degree in Physics extends over three years The final examination in Physics is taken in two parts an examination in ancillary Mathematics and written test in two languages French German Italian Russian or Spanish must also be taken Students are also expected to attend some of the second year courses in ancillary Mathematics although there is no examination on these courses The Wheatstone Physics Laboratory The Wheatstone Laboratory in the College and the Halley Stewart Laboratory at Hampstead are open to students for practical study and research Instruction is given in the Laboratory in the accurate measurement of physical quantities of all kinds and in the experimental verification and illustration of the principles of Physics Research The Research Laboratories are open to properly qualified persons for purposes of research under the general direction of the Head of the Department Research work for higher degrees may be undertaken At the present time five main types of research problem are open for study Biophysics research concerned with the properties and structure of single cells and their components investigated by such methods as ultra-violet microscopy electron microscopy infra-red and ultra-violet microspectrography Investigations into the structure of matter using nuclear radia- tions and high speed particles The design and use of solid scintillation counters Radio investigation of the atmosphere Theoretical research is in progress in Statistical Mechanics and in Wave Mechanics including applications of spectroscopic chemical and biological character Electronic computing devices
