89 UNIVERSITY OF LONDON KING'S COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Four-Year Course The Department is able to award yearly number of Board of Education Grants for men or women the holders are known as King's Scholars These grants may be awarded for degree course in the Faculty of Arts or Science followed by one year's professional training or in the case of students already in the College for the remainder of degree course followed by year of professional training The College does not provide degree course in Economics Applications for King's Scholarships must be made on special form and sent in not later than December 15th of the year preceding that in which the scholarship is to be awarded Selected candidates will be interviewed early in the year Owing to the keen competition for these grants preference is usually given to candidates who have passed or will be sitting for the Inter- mediate Examination before the commencement of the Session in which they wish to enter Scholarship-holders must sign Declaration that they intend to follow the profession of teacher in school approved by the Board of Education Accepted candidates may be exempted from payment of tuition fees and may receive in addition an annual maintenance grant of £26 for men or £20 for women which is increased to £43 for men or £34 for women in the case of those residing in one of the College hostels or in approved and supervised lodgings The amount of grants in aid of tuition fees and maintenance will in general depend on the student's other resources These grants are therefore to be regarded as maxima and may be reduced by an amount determined by the financial position of the student and or that of his parents or guardians Note -The attention of applicants living in the London area is drawn to the fact that London Senior Teachers' Scholarships are awarded only to those who have obtained Board of Education grant One-Year Course The course in professional training which extends over one session three terms is open to all men and women graduates of recognised Universities who are accepted by the Head of the Department No admission to the course can be granted without previous personal interview The work prepares for the Teacher's Diploma Examination of the University of London and is intended primarily for those who wish to teach in Secondary Schools The examination is held early in July of each year
