24 GENERAL INFORMATION COLLEGE SOCIETIES Permission from the Principal is requisite before forming any Society and the Rules must be submitted to him for approval Full particulars of all College Societies are contained in the official handbook of the Union Society UNION SOCIETY Patron The Principal The elected officers are the President two Vice-Presidents the Secretary two Assistant Secretaries the Treasurer and the Assistant Treasurer The names of the officers for the current session are given in Appendix Β at the end of the Calendar The objects of the Union Society as set out in its rules and con- stitution are -To promote social intercourse amongst its members and throughout the College the success of students' clubs and the interests of students generally and to provide means of recreation Membership of the Society is open to every regular student of the College and to members of the Staff Occasional students may become members for one year only on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty in which they are registered The annual subscription for regular and occasional students is £1 12 6d which in the case of regular students is included in the tuition fee paid to the College and entitles them to membership of all College Clubs and Societies the use of Common Rooms and the Athletic Ground and Pavilion and the right to vote at all General Meetings and Elections The control of the several students' clubs and societies is vested in the Union Society to which all the Athletic Clubs and many of the Societies are affiliated The affairs of the Society are conducted through an Executive Committee on which sit the Officers of the Union and representatives of every branch of student activity It meets monthly during the term and is assisted in the conduct of the Society's business by eleven sub-committees whose powers and duties are defined by constitution and whose proceedings are subject to ratification by the Executive Committee Two grades of Clubs and Societies exist for the benefit of the members "approved" and "affiliated the finances of the latter being entirely administered and directed by the Union Society while those of the former are not in any particular the responsibility of the Union Society The affiliated clubs are -The Association Football Badminton Boats Boxing Chess Cricket Fencing Fives Hockey Netball Rifle Rugby Football Squash Racquets Swimming Tennis
