χπ ANNUAL REPORT that after the war some means may be found of perpetuating the ties which have been forged between the two institutions and reviving the personal friendships between their members FINANCE The Block Grant from the Court and the Home Counties Grant were continued at £68 800 and £2 685 respectively The Fee Income was £31 682 an increase of £1 077 on the previous year and rather less than half the pre-war Income Expenditure on Staff Salaries was £47 894 and was approximately equal to that of the previous year It included £1 967 for payments to members of the Staff absent on national service of the difference between College salaries and the salaries they are now receiving Cost of Maintenance of Premises increased from £11 661 to £13 517 the increase being due to the additional activities in the College buildings following the return of the Medical Faculty to London Special Expenditure due to the war amounted to £11 251 and included payment of £2 536 to the University of Bristol for the cost of accommodation Grants of £2 217 to members of the Staff and of £359 to students were made in mitigation of hardships due to evacuation The total Expenditure was £111 159 leaving surplus of £1 380 which has been added to the balance in hand of £8 438 The accumulated surplus is accordingly £9 818 but this would have been no more than £1 187 if the normal contribution to the Reconstruction Fund for the New Library Building had not been suspended for the last three years Β-REPORTS OF DEPARTMENTS FACULTY OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS Number of Students Latin Intermediate 43 General Subsidiary 17 Honours Greek Intermediate Subsidiary Classics Honours Total 75
