iv ANNUAL REPORT Faculty of Engineering -- Mr Η Seed Demonstrator in Mechanical Engineering Dr Μ Fawzi part-time Demonstrator in Mechanical Engineering Mr Robertson Temporary Lecturer in Electrical Engineering Library -Mrs Carter Temporary Assistant DEATHS OP FORMER MEMBERS OF THE COLLEGE The College has to mourn the loss of three members of the staff As recorded on the Roll of Honour vii Τ Latham Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Laws has been posted as missing while acting as an observer during an operational flight The son of Sir John Latham the Chief Justice of Australia and Chancellor of the University of Melbourne he had distinguished career at Oxford which was crowned by an All Souls1 Fellowship He was young lawyer of marked intellectual and general ability and showed the fairest promise of distinguished future in his profession He had also the gift of clear exposition and was good and sympathetic teacher who was as popular with his students as with his colleagues At the outbreak of war he worked in the Foreign Office but joined the in July 1941 obtaining his commission in June 1942 McClelland Sc Ph Lecturer in Chemistry died after very short illness at Bristol He joined the staff as Demonstrator in 1924 becoming Assistant Lecturer in 1925 and Lecturer in 1931 He was first-rate teacher and selflessly devoted to the interests of the College and his students By his colleagues in the Senior Common Room Club of which at the time of his death he was Treasurer he will be especially missed quiet manner North of Ireland burr and rather high-pitched voice gave an added effectiveness to wit of dry but very excellent vintage He was the friendliest of men and one of those invaluable members of society whose unobtrusive work for the common good does more than they realise to promote the harmony and pleasantness of life Professor Stibbe whose health had for some time been cause of grave anxiety to his friends died at his home during the summer vacation He joined the staff of the College as Reader in Anatomy in 1935 and received the title of Professor in 1938 As Sub- Dean and Tutor in the Faculty of Medical Science he devoted himself whole-heartedly to the interests of the medical students in the College In Stibbe they had guide philosopher and friend on whose advice and help they could rely in difficulties of all kinds and whose interest in their welfare was by no means restricted to academic problems He was the kindest and most charitable of men and his unobtrusive benefactions to alleviate the plight of students in financial difficulty were many how many was known only to himself In all the diffi- culties of evacuation when the Medical Faculty was separated from the rest of the College he gave unstintingly of his time and energy and in
