SYLLABUSES OP COURSES 189 CHEMISTRY AND ENGINEERING METALLURGY Intermediate Lectures Yt and Laboratory Ys Courses in Chemistry are provided Whilst they are designed on broad lines an attempt is made to deal in more detail with those subjects of particular importance to engineers Lecture Course Zj in Engineering Metallurgy combined with Laboratory Work z2 is held during the Michaelmas and Lent Terms Chemistry Yj-Intermediate Lectures Two lectures per week Ys-Intermediate Practical Class One half-day per week Engineering Metallurgy Zj-Lectures The constitution and microstructure of the iron- carbon alloys and the principal non-ferrous alloys Detailed study of selected alloys including plain carbon steels alloy steels brasses bronzes aluminium alloys bearing metals The influence of mechanical and heat treatment on the structure and properties of these materials The investigation of defects and failures Specifications Z2-Laboratory Metallographic study of the alloys dealt with in the lectures including preparation of the necessary specimens Heat treatment POSTGRADUATE COURSES Civil Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Advanced Courses suitable for those who have already compieted Diploma or Degree Course in Engineering may be arranged each Course occupying Student's whole time for Session The Courses which are under the Professor in each department can be varied to suit the special requirements of individual Students Chemical Engineering This Course which at present covers one Session is designed so that it may be taken in the year after the Final Examination by Students who have devoted their undergraduate studies primarily either to Chemistry or to Engineering Its exact nature is therefore varied in accordance with the previous training of the Student The Course is organised by the Department of Chemistry and Engineering Students desiring to take this Postgraduate Course should communicate with Mr Cremer in the Department of Chemistry These courses are unavoidably discontinued during the war
