184 FACULTY OF ENGINEERING ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING The Laboratory is open on week-days frpm 30 to except on Saturdays when it closes at Occasional Students attend the Laboratory at times to be specially arranged by the Professor Regular Students are admitted to the Courses of Lectures and Laboratory Work in Electrical Engineering after the First Year of the Three Years1 Course They must produce qualifying Certificates in connection with their first year's work Students who have not passed Preliminary Course at the College equivalent to the First Year's Course can be admitted on producing the same qualifying Certificates as are mentioned in the preceding clause or other evidence of equal proficiency in these subjects The William Siemens Laboratory The William Siemens Laboratory is open throughout the week for advanced Students whose preparation qualifies them for conducting original researches under advice and direction of the Professor The Laboratory Equipment includes one Siemens 8-pole revolving field type 100-kilowatt Alternator 1- 2- or 3-phase at 750 revolutions per minute specially constructed to give varying volts for laboratory pur- poses and 75 shunt wound Motor with commutation poles Siemens shunt wound open type 4-pole 25 Motor Siemens compound wound 4-pole 550-volt Generator Two Dick Kerr shunt wound open type 4-pole 25 Motors One 20-kilowatt Westing- house Rotary Converter for 1- 2- and 3-phase Alternating Currents One 5-kilowatt 2-phase Rotary Converter and the necessary controlling and measuring apparatus 5-kilowatt variable frequency motor- driven three-phase sine-wave alternator with control equipment and iron-testing apparatus 1500-volt direct-current motor-generator with separate exciter Two Siemens direct-current 11 -kilowatt machines and two Alternating Current machines each of 10 kilowatts output arranged for differential testing Metropolitan-Vickers 7Ā£ double squirrel-cage induction motor Two 3-phase Induction Motors arranged for cascade connection and pole changing and variety of single and polyphase machines 14-kilowatt 100 000-volt Trans- former and others of lower voltage traction motor testing equip- ment consisting of two 35 Dick Kerr Motors with controllers rheostats &c for series parallel working and special test-bed mount- ing arranged for testing the motors differentially with and without the gear 10 Westinghouse single-phase series Alternating
