172 FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Syllabus Candidates are required to satisfy the Examiners in the following subjects English one paper of hours general paper comprising questions in Literature History and Geography Pure Mathematics two papers of hours each Arithmetic Algebra including graphs indices logarithms and progressions but excluding the Binomial Theorem Geometry subject-matter of Euclid I-IV or its equivalent together with the properties of similar triangles Trigonometry relations between the trigonometrical ratios of an acute angle and their use in the solution of right-angled triangles mensuration of circular arcs and areas Two only of the following alternative subjects ono paper of hours in each subject Language Latin Greek French German Italian Spanish or Russian Translation Prose Composition and Grammar Elementary Mechanics uniform acceleration parallelogram of velocities momentum force energy work Equilibrium of body under three forces moments centres of gravity Pressures of liquids Archimedes' Principle Elementary Physics including heat light electricity and magnetism Elementary Chemistry including the principal properties of matter the laws of chemical affinity atomic weights valency and the chemistry of the principal inorganic elements First Year Examination This examination is identical with the Special Intermediate Sc Engineering Examination for particulars of which see above under Courses for the Sc Engineering Degree Second Year Examination The courses for and subjects of this Examination are identical with those of the Part Degree Examination see above Candidates for the Diploma are required to pass in Strength and Elasticity of Materials and in Mathematics and in at least four of the remaining subjects of this Examination Candidates for the Certificate must pass in any five of the subjects of this Examination
