120 DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION All students must attend courses on the Principles of Education the English Educational System Elementary Psychology Hygiene and General Method and one of the following -History of Education Comparative Education Advanced Educational Psychology Classes in the methods of teaching special subjects are also provided Gppor- tunities are afforded for visits of inspection to special types of Schools and facilities for study in other institutions of the University minimum of 60 days is spent teaching and observing in Secondary Schools and students are expected to carry out preliminary practice for three weeks in Elementary Schools during September The fee for the course is 40 guineas but is reduced to 32 guineas for those students who are registered graduates of the College These fees may be paid in equal terminal instalments on payment of an additional guinea in the first term registration fee of one guinea is further payable by all students who are not already members of the College Students who have not matriculated in the University of London are required to pay registration fee of £3 3s to the University before they can be registered as Internal students The entry fee for the Teacher's Diploma Examination is £6 6s for all students whether or not they are in receipt of Board of Education grants limited number of fee-paying students who wish to enter the Elementary or Central Schools will be eligible for recognition by the Board of Education as certificated teachers No guarantee can be given in advance to private students that they will be recommended by the Department for recognition as it is not possible to decide to whom this will be of most service until after the beginning of each session This recognition is of value to such students only and does not affect the prospects of appointment or emoluments of Secondary School teachers The Department is also able each year to award number of Board of Education grants for men or women tenable for the one year of pro- fessional training the holders of which are known as King's Scholars These students if residing in one of the College hostels or in approved lodgings pay no tuition fees and receive maintenance grants of £43 or £34 for men or women respectively Day students pay no tuition fees but the maintenance grant payable to them will depend on their financial resources and will in no case exceed £26 for men or £20 for women Applications can be made by graduates or by students in the last year of their degree course on special form which must be sent in not later than December 15th of the year preceding that in which the scholarship is to be awarded Selected candidates will be interviewed early in the year All grant-earning students are eligible for recog- nition by the Board of Education as certificated teachers if successful in the Teacher's Diploma Examination and must sign Declaration that they intend to take teaching post in school or institution approved by the Board of Education
