COURSES OF STUDY 103 The College requires students whose main subject is Physics to offer Pure Mathematics as their subsidiary subject and students whose main subject is Chemistry to offer subsidiary Physics For the former students special subsidiary course in Pure Mathematics is arranged which enables candidates to take the examination at the end of one session All other subsidiary courses are identical with the General Degree courses and candidate cannot sit for the examination until after two years of study Approved Third-Year Courses Students who pass their final degree examination after two years of internal registration are awarded the degree only after third year spent on course approved by the University Before sitting for their final examination such students should inform the College Registration Clerk of the course they propose to take Suitable courses for student in the Faculty of Science include Research work usually with view to obtaining Higher Degree course for Sc Special Degree Mathematics Advanced Subjects for students who havo already taken the Sc Special Mathematics Candidates taking the second alternative are not required to offer sub- sidiary subject In the cases of Chemistry and Mathematics two years of study are required before entry to the examination in these subjects For the period of the war however this third year will be excused if the student can produce satisfactory evidence of being engaged in national sendee or is recommended by the College for exemption otherwise the University does not recognise as an approved third-year course any course for the Teacher's Diploma II-FOR HIGHER DEGREES In addition to Internal Graduates of the University of London External Graduates and Graduates of other Universities are admitted to courses leading to the degrees of Sc and Ph The degree of Sc is awarded not on thesis but on the merits of original published work not done under direction and no course is prescribed Facilities are offered in the various laboratories of the College to persons wishing to undertake research of this character For full details concerning the various Higher Degrees the University Regulations should be consulted Ill-IN THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION course in professional training extending over one session three terms is open to all men and women graduates of recognised uni- versities who are accepted by the Head of the Department Details of the classes are given on page 119 and full particulars of the Depart- ment and of the Board of Education grants tenable in the Department are given on pages 121-123 The Institute of Education also offers four-year grants available for men and women tenable for degree courses at King College followed by professional training at the Institute Full particulars may be ob- tained from the Secretary University of London Institute of Education 42 Portman Square London Early application is advisable
