ANNUAL REPORT xi Common Room meetings after Hall were held several times each term Among the visiting speakers all much appreciated were the Reverend Lash of Poona the Reverend Marnton Mills of the Guild of St Raphael and the Reverend Trench General Superintendent of the Missions to Seamen There has been an increasing demand for the use of the Hostel as place of conference during the vacations This is gratifying both as witness to the efficiency of the Hostel management and as welcome source of income Final year men seeking titles about forty in number have experienced little difficulty in obtaining them In addition to those seeking immedi- ate ordination fifteen final year men proceeded to Theological Colleges for further period of training The Hostel had as usual among its residents most of the leading students in the Theological Faculty and it again played representa- tive part in the life of the College Societies and in the College Sports Considerable expense has again been incurred for necessary renova- tion of the fabric and for additions and replacements in furnishing Great improvements have been made in the furnishing and decoration of the Common Room The provision of cork lino for the corridors has greatly decreased noise and paint has been used instead of distemper in the redecoration of the walls in the corridors and in some of the rooms At the end of the Session the Hostel lost the services of the Reverend Abbott on his appointment as Principal of the Bishop's Hostel Lincoln Mr Abbott has resided in the Hostel during the past four years and for three years was Chaplain of the Hostel as well as Chaplain of the College Subject to the Warden he has been largely responsible for the successful conduct of the Hostel during that time The Council desires to record its grateful sense of the very valuable service which Mr Abbott has rendered to the Hostel and to the College and its appreciation of his untiring devotion and of his deep and far- reaching influence for good The resignation of the Dean from the office of Warden of the Hostel and the appointment of Professor Hardman as his successor became effective at the end of the Session The Council has made this important change after full consideration of the difficult problems involved confident that it will increase the efficiency of the administration both of the Hostel and of the Faculty as whole The Council is aware that the ultimate justification of its work is to be sought in the spiritual quality of the men prepared for ordination This must in modern conditions increasingly depend upon the life and conduct of the Hostel Prizes Barry Prize Renwick Box Prize Rev Ninham Elocution Prize divided Court Nott Jelf Prize Renwick
