xliv ANNUAL REPORT taking Mechanical Engineering subjects in the Final Examination obtained First Class Honours including one External and Second Class Honours Eight Postgraduate students were working in the Department during the Session Dr Davies was awarded the degree of Sc in the University of London and Mr Ross was awarded the degree of Ph in the University of Edinburgh for thesis entitled The Creep of Concrete with special reference to the Use of Portland Blast Furnace Cement Mr Rowe was awarded the degree of Ph in the University of London for thesis entitled Fuel Injection in Internal Combustion Engines Professor Cook held the office of Chairman of the Board of Studies in Civil and Mechanical Engineering and was member of the Senate He was appointed member of the Research Committee of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Pressed Steel Research Committee of the Institution of Automobile Engineers Dr Davies delivered lectures at the Technical High School Berlin and gave an evening discourse on Diesel Engines and Coastal Shipping at the meeting of the British Association at Norwich He continued to act as President of the Engineers' German Circle is mem- ber of the Committee of the Internal Combustion Engines Group of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and has served as Chairman of the External Board of Examiners DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING There were students taking Electrical Engineering subjects in the Final Year Degree Course and Postgraduate students In the Sc Eng Examination student obtained First Class Honours obtained Second Class Honours and Pass Degree One student retired from the Examination and one student repeating the Examination obtained Pass Degree The following research work was carried out in the Department during the Session Mr Vincent-Clarke continued experimental work on the characteristics of double-cage induction motors and on the measure- ment of acceleration of motors Mr Bahns investigated the wave form of the currents on the and sides of mercury arc rectifiers under various conditions of load Mr Preist investi- gated the stability of operation of short-wave valve generators Pro- fessor Catterson-Smith made some preliminary investigations of the methods of measuring sequence components of current and voltage in unbalanced three-phase circuits The following items of equipment were added during the Session new rotor was purchased for the Double-cage Motor presented by Messrs Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company ii Several pro- tective relays were added to the testing equipment iii vibration
