ANNUAL REPORT xxxix After obtaining his Ph in December Dr Nandi continued with cytological investigations on various plants and completed another paper on the cytology of rice with results which throw light on the origin of the genus Oryza Mr Raghavan has completed for publication paper on the floral morphology of Cleome Mr Ramanujam who has been for ten years engaged on rice research at Coimbatore is making cytological survey of all the genera related to rice Departmental Notes The summer ecological foray was held this year in the Isle of Wight under the direction of Dr Pension and was attended by five students During the year Professor Gates completed an extensive account of genetical survey of Oenothera in Eastern Canada which began with seed-collecting tour in 1932 In September 1935 he made further collecting tour in Nova Scotia and the Gaspo peninsula in connection with this work Cytological Exhibition was held in the Department in March Professor Gates took part in discussion on Natural Selection at the Royal Society and was invited as an official guest to the British Associa- tion meeting in Blackpool During the Session he continued to act as member of Council of the Royal Anthropological Institute the Royal Microscopical Society and the Eugenics Society and on the executive of the British Population Society and the British Social Hygiene Council He is also Chairman of the new Bureau of Human Heredity and took part in the Conference of the International Federation of Eugenic Organisations at Scheveningen on Inheritance in Man The Race and Culture Committee of the Royal Anthropological Institute of which he is member produced Report which has been circulated Professor Gates has also acted as Secretary of the Blood Group Committee of the British Association which is obtaining the blood groups of primitive peoples in various parts of the world including Canada Kenya Tibet India Cashmir and Assam Professor Gates lectured to the Birkbeck Geographic Society on The Mackenzie River and to the Hampstead Scientific Society on Blood Groups '1 The Courtauld Laboratory in Regent's Park has'been of great service in connection with the genetical work Many thousand plants have been grown especially for investigations on Oenothera Cotton and its relatives Rice and related genera Indian Wheats The Grant from the Empire Cotton-Growing Corporation has been renewed for another period of three years The funds available are however still inadequate for full use of the facilities and it is hoped that the present endowment may be somewhat increased Two members of the staff of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and one of the Natural History Museum have given help in making technical descriptions of new forms of Oenothera set of about sixty co-type specimens of new species and varieties of
