XXXV111 ANNUAL REPORT Dr Wells was Recorder of Section Geology of the British Association and member of council of the Mineralogical Society Dr Wooldridge acted as External Examiner in Geography for the University of London and Secretary of the Board of Studies in Geography he also served on the Geography Sub-Committee of the British Educational Films DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY Number of Students Intermediate Science First Medical 57 33 Sc Special and General 13 24 Intercollegiate Research Plant Geography Total Remits of Examinations In the Sc Special Examination candidates received Second Class Honours and Pass Degree The Carter Prize in Botany was awarded to Miss Lois Wrinch Higher Degrees Sc Catcheside nine published works in Cytogenetics Ph Dobbs Studies in the Mucorales Parts I-IV Ph Naithani Chromosome Studies in Hyacinthus orientalis Parts I-III Ph Η Nandi Cytological Investigations of Rice Varieties Researches All members of the staff have been actively engaged in research and nine other research students have been carrying forward investigations Mr Bhatia is making cytogenetic study of some Indian wheats and has produced an octoploid wheat hybrid which may be of much economic value Dr Dobbs has completed his investigations of Dicranophora and Mucor and is taking part during the summer in an expedition to Spitzbergen Mr Ford has in the press significant paper on trisomic Oenotheras and is completing another on the cytology of the Malvaceae this work being carried on during this Session with the aid of Grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Miss Lang is completing her work on the pollen of the Malvaceae as well as study of the yeasts in the pollen of Camellia japonica and has been awarded the King College bursary of the British Association for the Blackpool meeting Miss Lawrence has been engaged in morphological studies of the Cucurbitaceae 35 90 37 11 187
