XXV111 ANNUAL REPORT Results of Examinations King's College Other Colleges Entered Passed Entered Ī” assed Intermediate Arts 16 12 16 14 General Sudbsiiary Honours Certificate Journalism Com Intermediate Com Final Totals 35 29 39 31 Departmental Notes Mr Darling who graduated in 1934 University College was awarded Travelling Scholarship by the Spanish Government and is working in Madrid on dissertation for the degree of entitled Reconstruction of the Original Text of the Arcipreste de Hita's Libro de Buen Amor based on Critical Examination of the Versions Extant Miss Ethel Bree continued her study of the seventeenth-century Spanish novel with reference to the English novelists of the eighteenth century gift received through Professor Pastor enabled substantial additions to be made to the Library It is to be hoped that in the not too distant future it will be the best working library of Spanish in the country Some interesting additions were also made to the small collection of records The Head of the Department delivered two lectures at the Institut d'Etudes Hispaniques of the University of Paris on some aspects of the evolution of practical ethics as reflected in the ideals of the gentleman the caballero and the gentilhomme He also gave some broadcasts on "The Spanish Scene and the Spanish Tradition Miss Janet Perry gave broadcast talk on the subject of Spanish Galicia and delivered lecture on Galician Poetry at the Oxford University Spanish Club The public lectures organised in the Department or under its auspices were very largely attended During the Michaelmas Term Professor Vinas of the University of Seville and the Institut d'Etudes Hispaniques in Paris gave course of four lectures on Philip and Elizabeth based on original research in the archives of Spain and France Senor Sanchez Canton Assistant Director of the Prado Museum gave six lectures on Aspects of Spanish Painting from the Thirteenth to the Seventeenth Century at the Courtauld Institute During the Lent Term Don Pedro Salinas of the University of Madrid gave three lectures of outstanding interest on Nineteenth-Century Spain as expressed in Spanish Literature During this term also the Depart- ment was honoured by the visit of the veteran Rector of the University
