XV111 ANNUAL REPORT working of the new system the Delegacy have created special post in the Medical Faculty that of Tutor and Sub-Dean It will be the duty of this officer to be responsible for the admission of all medical students and for this purpose to keep in close touch with the Deans of the Associated Hospital Medical Schools In the Faculty of Engineering the experiment foreshadowed in the last Report of providing short course of lectures on Industrial Organisation has proved very successful The lectures open to the voluntary attendance of third-year and postgraduate students of Engineering were well attended and their usefulness clearly appreciated The Delegacy are indebted to the assistance of the authorities of the London School of Economics in this matter and to Mr Schwartz who delivered the course In the Department of Chemical Engineering the Leverhulme Trustees have generously established Research Studentship of the value of Ā£250 per annum to enable the holder to undertake an advanced course of study or to conduct original research in Chemical Engineering Miss Brittain has resigned the Wardenship of the Hostel for Women Students which she has held with conspicuous success since 1927 When Miss Paul resigned the office of Tutor to Women Students in 1932 Miss Brittain was appointed as her successor and for the last four years she has carried the heavy burden of the two offices of Warden and Tutor Experience however has shown that though there are certain administrative advantages to be derived from the combination of these two posts they make together too exacting demands upon any single individual The Delegacy have therefore returned to the previous arrangement under which the two offices were separate Miss Brittain will continue to be Tutor to Women Students an office the duties of which have steadily grown in number and importance with the growth of the College in recent years In particular it is hoped that under the new arrangement further development may be possible in promoting the employment of women graduates of the College which has become an important part of the Tutor's work To succeed Miss Brittain at the Hostel the Delegacy have appointed Miss Priscilla Boys Smith who will simultaneously hold part-time post in the Department of History thus ensuring that there is continuous contact between the direction of the Hostel and the academic work of the College To this principle that the Warden should also be member of the academic staff of the College the Delegacy attach great importance Mention may finally be made of change in the conditions of the award of the Jelf Medals These are provided by Trust Fund administered by the Council and are awarded annually in each Faculty to the Student of the Third Year who shall in the opinion of the Principal have most distinguished himself Though the regulations imply their award in every Faculty none has in practice been hitherto awarded in the Faculty of Laws The Council have been approached and have agreed to remedy this anomaly Fortunately the accumula-
