ANNUAL REPORT XVII The retirement of Professor Sir Percy Nunn from the Directorship of the Institute of Education will deprive the College of valued friend and collaborator but the Delegacy are glad to welcome his successor Professor Clarke who has already shown that co-operation between the Institute and the Department is likely to remain as close and harmonious as before In the Department of Psychology an additional part-time Demon- strator has been appointed in Mental Hygiene to give demonstrations and seminars in which the practical problems of child training and treatment with view to the prevention of mental disorders could be discussed In the Department of Mathematics Professor Jolliffe and Professor Dale have both retired upon reaching the prescribed age limit Pro- fessor Temple has been appointed Head of the Department in sue- cession to Professor Jolliffe Professor Semple has been appointed to the second Chair in Mathematics and Professor Dale who held College professorship has been replaced by University Reader with special qualifications in Applied Mathematics An additional full- time Assistant Lecturer and part-time Assistant have also been ap- pointed The increase in the number of students and in particular the growing number of those reading for General Honours had rendered it advisable to split up the classes into smaller and more homogeneous groups The additions made to the staff will enable this desirable policy to be carried out and will complete the reorganisation of the department In the Faculty of Medical Science the arrangements for the teaching of Pharmacology have been reorganised as result of the report upon the medical curriculum and the Department is now merged in that of Physiology Dr Inchley of whose subsequent death the Delegacy have learned with deep sorrow retired during the Session from the headship of the Department of Pharmacology In place of Dr Inchley part-time Lecturer has been appointed to give the lectures in Pharma- cology while the practical classes in this subject will form part of the duties of full-time Assistant Lecturer in Physiology who has been additionally appointed to the staff Reference was made in the last Report to the necessity of meeting certain criticisms of the University Inspectors and the University Grants Committee as to the arrangements existing between the College and its Associated Hospital Medical Schools in respect of the admission of students and the lack of uniformity of fees charged during the pre- clinical course The changes involved number of very complicated and delicate adjustments but the Delegacy are glad to be able to report that thanks to the friendly co-operation of the Deans and Governing Bodies of the Hospital Medical Schools general agreement has been reached which has received the approval of the Senate Within the terms of this concordat specific agreements for term of years have now been contracted between the College and each of the four Hospital Medical Schools In order to secure the efficient and harmonious
