xvi ANNUAL REPORT and utilising the space so vacated for Library purposes In spite however of the expenditure of much time trouble and ingenuity by the Accommodations Committee the scheme unfortunately broke down It proved eventually to be impracticable to get the necessary substituted accommodation for the considerable area of equipped laboratory space of which the College would have been deprived for long period An alternative scheme put forward by the Delegacy has received the approval of the Court but is not yet sufficiently advanced to make it suitable matter for report at this stage In the Faculty of Arts mention was made in the last Report of the appointment of Mr Tom Clarke as Director of Practical Journalism There can be no question that the new Director has succeeded in arousing the lively interest of the journalistic profession in the opportunities offered by university education for journalists Some suggestions for further reorganisation of the Journalism Diploma have been made by the Journalism Committee and are now under discussion by the appropriate committees of the Senate In the Department of Portuguese the Delegacy were unable to replace Professor Prestage by an English scholar of comparable maturity and acknowledged distinction In these circumstances the Senate have agreed to the temporary suspension of the Chair and the Delegacy have appointed lecturer to take charge of the Department It is hoped in this way to provide an opportunity for young scholar of promise to continue and develop his studies in field of scholarship in which the English workers are very few Mention is made elsewhere in this Report of the most recent evidence of the welcome interest shown by the Government of Brazil in the Department large and valuable collection of works in Portuguese dealing with Brazilian subjects has been presented to the College by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rio de Janeiro Many of the volumes contained in this collection are exceedingly difficult to procure if not unprocurable elsewhere in this country The Department of Spanish has benefited by the recent action of the Comite Hispano-Inglis of Madrid in instituting scholarship to enable students of the University of London to spend year of study in Spain and the Delegacy welcome the decision of the University to reciprocate this generous action by establishing for the next five years an annual studentship of not less than Ā£70 for students from Spain As in the case of the analogous studentships for Frenchmen the Delegacy have been glad to co-operate in the scheme by providing free places in the College for holders of University studentship for Spanish students In the Department of Education Dr Titley has been appointed Acting Head of the Department pending an appointment to the Chair of Education vacated by Professor Dover Wilson The gratitude of the Delegacy is due to the Thomas Wall Trustees for their generous decision to continue for further period of five years their grant for the main- tenance of Thomas Wall Readership in Comparative Education
