annual report XI Mr Ε Ellis second-year student reading for Honours Classics in the Faculty of Arts Miss Barbara Joan Kirby second-year student in the Department of Mathematics and resident at the Women's Hostel Mr Morgan President of the Union Society third-year student in the Faculty of Arts who had just obtained his Honours degree in History Mr Arthur Saville student in the Faculty of Arts from 1934 to 1936 Fellows of the College The following were appointed Fellows of the College Professor Gilbert Cook Sc Inst Mech who has been Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the College since 1921 Sir Halley Stewart who is Chairman of the Halley Stewart Trust which has greatly enhanced the facilities for research in Physics by placing 30 Chesterford Gardens at the disposal of the College and by the endowment of the research carried on therein Dr John William Pickering Sc who was formerly student of the College and has been Honorary Lecturer in Physiology since 1923 Mr Cyril Kenneth Bird Sc Inst who was student in the Faculty of Engineering from 1904 to 1908 and took his Sc Degree in 1908 he was awarded the Diploma in that year since the War in which he was seriously wounded he has achieved distinguished position in another profession under the nom de plume of Fougasse he has always kept in close touch with the College Engineering Faculty and with the College as whole and his many acts of service have been much appreciated Distinctions and Appointments Gained by Past and Present Members op the College Fellows -The honorary degree of Doctor of Science was conferred by the University of Oxford upon Sir George Newman Fellow of the College II Staff -The Principal again served on the Committee appointed by the Universities Bureau of the British Empire for the selection of candidates for the Carnegie Corporation Grants 1936-37 He was also re-elected representative of the Senate upon the Court The Order of Companion of Honour was conferred upon Professor Dover Wilson in the New Year's Honours The title of Professor Emeritus was conferred upon Professor Jameson Professor Ε Appleton was appointed to the Jacksonian Chair of Natural Philosophy in the University of Cambridge he was also elected Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Professor Gilbert Cook was appointed to the Regius Chair of Civil Engineering and Mechanics in the University of Glasgow
