VI ANNUAL REPORT Changes in the Staff The resignations of Professor Blair and Professor Dover Wilson which were recortjpd in last year's Report took effect on December 31st 1935 upon their taking up their appointments to the Regius Chair of Anatomy in the University of Glasgow and the Regius Chair of English Literature in the University of Edinburgh respectively The Scottish demand for Regius Professors from King's appears however to be unsatisfied and the Delegacy have accepted with regret the resignation of Professor Gilbert Cook Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Head of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering in the College upon his appointment to the Regius Chair of Civil Engineering and Mechanics in the University of Glasgow Professor Cook was appointed to the staff of the College in 1921 since when he has presided over the Department of Mechanical Engineering with unostentatious ability Under his charge many changes have been carried through with quiet efficiency and much improvement has been effected in equipment with the maximum economy His fairness of mind and sound sense have made notable contribution to the policy both of the Engineering Faculty and of the College as whole His departure will mean serious loss to the College his agreeable company will be missed by his colleagues in the Common Room present students will regret the absence of real friend and teacher and all members of the Engineering Society will miss exhibitions of musical talent which was the counterpart of his gifts of instruction combining as it did sure technique with lightness of touch The Delegacy have again reason to be grateful to the University of Glasgow and its Vice- Chancellor for allowing them to retain until December 31st 1936 the services of professor appointed late in the year to Regius Chair in Scotland Cambridge too has once more taken its toll and has recalled Pro- fessor Appleton to fill the Jacksonian Chair of Natural Philosophy The following resolution is recorded on the Minutes of the Delegacy The Delegacy desire to congratulate Professor Edward Victor Appleton Sc LL upon his appointment to the Jacksonian Chair of Natural Philosophy in the University of Cambridge and to express their gratitude for the services which he has rendered to King's College Professor Appleton was appointed Wheatstone Professor of Physics in 1924 During his tenure of the Chair he has not only maintained but added to its great traditions and has proved himself to be worthy successor of Wheatstone Clerk Maxwell Wilson Barkla and Richard- son His researches into the problems of the Ionosphere have earned for him world-wide recognition as scientist and have done honour to himself and to the College Upon this occasion however the Delegacy would desire specially to express their gratitude for his no less remarkable services as teacher of undergraduates and director of research for the conspicuous ability in practical affairs and powers
