faculty of arts Ill obtained from the Secretary Institute of Education Southampton Row One-Year Course The course in professional training which extends over one session three terms is open to all men and women graduates of recognised Universities who are accepted by the Head of the Department No admission to the course can be granted without previous personal interview The work prepares for the Teacher's Diploma Examination of the University of London and is intended primarily for those who wish to teach in Secondary Schools The examination is held early in July of each year All students must attend courses on the Principles of Education the English Educational System Elementary Psychology Hygiene and General Method and one of the following -History of Education Comparative Education Advanced Educational Psychology Inter- collegiate lectures Collegiate lectures and seminars in the methods of teaching special subjects and for science students course in the History and Method of Science and practical course in Laboratory Arts are also provided There are in addition lectures and tutorials in Speech Training and course in Physical Training Opportunities are afforded for visits of inspection to special types of schools and facilities for study in other institutions of the University Two days week are spent teaching and observing in Secondary Schools and students are expected to carry out preliminary practice for three weeks in Elementary Schools during September The fee for the course is 40 guineas which may be paid in equal term- inal instalments on payment of an additional £1 in the first term The fee is reduced to 32 guineas for those students who are registered gradu- ates of the College Students who have not matriculated in the Uni- versity of London are required to pay registration fee of £3 35 to the University before they can be registered as Internal students The fee for the Teacher's Diploma Examination is £6 6s for all students irrespec- tive of whether they are in receipt of Board of Education grants or not The Board of Education will award its certificate on the recommenda- tion of the Department to limited number of fee-paying students who wish to enter the Elementary or Central Schools No guarantee can be given in advance to private students that they will be placed on the list of those so recommended as it is not possible to decide to whom it will be of most service until after the commencement of each Session This certification is only of value to such students and does not affect the prospects of appointment or emoluments of Secondary School teachers The Department is able each year to award maximum of six Board of Education grants for men only tenable for the one year of professional training the holders of which are known as King's Scholars Students receiving these grants pay no tuition fees and receive in addition maintenance grant of £26 per annum increased to £43 per annum in the case of those residing in one of the College hostels Applications can
