110 faculty of arts II -FOR HIGHER DEGREES In addition to Internal Graduates of the University of London External Graduates and Graduates of other Universities are admitted to courses leading to the Degrees of and Ph The Degree of Lit is not awarded on thesis but on the merits of original pub- lished work not done under direction and no course is prescribed For all details concerning the various Higher Degrees the University Regulations should be consulted III -DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Four-Year Course The Department is able each year to award 10-15 Board of Education Grants formen only the holders of which are known as King's Scholars These grants may be awarded for degree course in the Faculty of Arts or Science followed by one year's professional training or in the case of students already in the College for the remainder of degree course followed by year of professional training The College does not provide degree course in Economics Applications for King's Scholarships must be made on special form and sent in together with copies of two testimonials not later than December 15th of the year preceding that in which the scholarship is to be awarded The testimonials should offer some evidence not only of character and ability but also of promise for the teaching profession -such as testimony to that effect from Headmasters or other responsible teachers Selected candidates will be interviewed before February 1st Owing to the keen competition for these grants preference is usually given to candidates who have passed or will be sitting for the Inter- mediate Examination before the commencement of the Session in which they wish to enter Accepted candidates pay no tuition fees and may receive in addition maintenance grant of £26 per annum which is increased to £43 per annum in the case of those residing in one of the College hostels The Board of Education provides however that the aid should be varied to correspond with the student's other resources These grants are therefore to be regarded as maxima and may be reduced by an amount determined by the financial position of the student and or that of his parents or guardians Scholarship-holders must sign an undertaking that they intend to follow the profession of teacher in school approved by the Board of Education Note -The attention of applicants living in the London area is drawn to the fact that London Senior Teachers' Scholarships are awarded only to those who have been successful in obtaining Board of Education grant The Institute of Education also offers four-year grants available for men and women tenable for degree courses at King's College followed by training at the Institute Full particulars may be
