62 PRIZES flMumptre fl ri3e for Englisb Xanguage anb Literature The Friends and former Pupils of the Very Rev Edward Hayes Plumptre Dean of Wells formerly Professor of Pastoral Theology at King's College presented to the College the sum of £128 9s 5d for the purpose of founding Prize to bear his name The Prize which is of the value of £5 is open to regular Students of the Theological Faculty who have been in attendance during any one of the three preceding terms No Student may obtain this Prize second time The Prize will be awarded on the result of an Examination and an Essay to be submitted by the Candidates Half the total marks will be assigned to the Essay Names of Candidates and their Essays must be sent to the Secretary of the College on the Saturday preceding the Examination The subject in 1931 will be "Dr Johnson as Student of Human Nature The subject in 1932 will be Chaucer's Canterbury Tales For the Examination in 1931 Candidates will be expected to show acquaintance with the life and times of Dr Johnson and in 1932 with the life and times of Chaucer Wbicbelow IReabing Ip ri3e5 These Prizes were founded in 1917 under the will of the Rev James Shearer Whichelow Vicar of St James' Muswell Hill Fellow of King's College who bequeathed £100 to found Prizes for Proficiency in Public Reading for Students in the Theological Department of the College The Prizes consist of standard works in Theology Two Prizes will be allotted if sufficient merit is shown and may be either First and Second Prize or two Prizes of equal value The Prizes are open to all Students who are preparing for the Associateship in Theology in the Final Year of their course Every Candidate must produce Certificate from the Lecturer in Elocution of satisfactory attendance at the Elocution Classes or of exemption by him from such attendance of competence in Reading list of approved Candidates will be drawn up by the Lecturer in the Lent Term of each Session and the Examination will be held at the close of that Term The Examination will be taken in book of the Bible and selection of the printed Sermons of great Preacher These books will be selected from year to year and announced some time before the competition takes place The Examination will be con- ducted by members of the Professorial Board
