ANNUAL REPORT vii be accommodated in the building Even when these had been obtained many applications from students had to be rejected In the last report it was observed that still further enlargement of the Hostel would be desirable if any way could be found The Hostel Committee has con- sidered the question but has not found any scheme which it could recommend The work on the front court has been completed and the paved entrance and turf have added greatly to the dignity of the Hostel's front in Vincent Square Grand Night was held as usual in November The large attendance of former members taxed the resources of the Hostel to the utmost but by using the Common Room and Lounge and having an earlier dinner for first-year men it was found possible to seat all our guests The life of the Hostel has proceeded with vigour and the discipline has been good Several devotional addresses have been given in the Chapel by Dr Bicknell the Sub-Warden Canon Storr Canon Woodward and other visitors Some talks and discussions after dinner have also been arranged by the Sub-Warden Dr Flint has consented to act as Medical Officer to the Hostel and it need scarcely be said that this arrangement has been found very satisfactory The Council express their thanks to the Hostel Committee to the Executive Committee particularly to Professor Jenkins and Mr Shovel- ton to the Sub-Warden and the Matron for their work in the manage- ment and direction of the Hostel It has been of great advantage to have Professor Rogers and Professor Bicknell in residence Several conferences have made use of the Hostel during the vacations In the summer the Hostel was placed at the disposal of the Lambeth Conference Several Bishops were in residence during July and part of August and many members of the delegation from the Eastern Church stayed in the Hostel during July letter of thanks has been received from the Archbishop of Canterbury which bears witness to the excellent arrangements made by the Matron for the comfort of our guests sub-committee of the Conference used the Hostel Library as its meeting place Reception for Members of Lambeth Conference The Council gave reception at the College in July to members of the Lambeth Conference large number of Bishops and their friends accepted the invitation The guests were received by the Bishop of London Chairman of the Council Demonstrations by the Departments of Physics and Psychology were arranged for which the Council is indebted to the heads and staff of those Departments Professor Hearnshaw gave short sketch of the history of the College Benefactions Contributions received or promised through the Centenary Appeal Fund for the benefit of the Theological Department amounted to £18 066 of which £5 065 was ear-marked for the Hostel Building
