ANNUAL REPORT xxxiii Departmental Notes The Carter Prize in Botany based on the work of the Session was awarded to Mr Dark The Biological Club met at regular intervals during the first and second terms the Department of Zoology joining in the programme of certain meetings Miss Κ Goodwin Sc was employed as Professor Gates' Research Assistant with grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Genetical experiments were carried out as usual in Regent's Park Botanical Gardens Since these Gardens are to be thrown open to the public as decided by Government when the lease expires early in 1932 it has become necessary to make some provision for the continuation of such facilities when the present arrangement has come to an end The summer field class in ecology in which eleven students took part was held at Braunton Devon from July 5th to 12th 1929 in charge of Dr Cook In connection with these ecological studies the excep- tionally high total of 573 plants was collected including 433 species of flowering plants and 140 cryptogams During the summer Professor Gates visited South Africa bringing back botanical materials from Rhodesia Transvaal and Natal as well as the Cape During the Session the Department was extended by the incorpora- tion of three small laboratories taken over from the Department of Geology of cytological research Department of Geography Number of Students Day Evening let Year 24 11 2nd Year 34 3rd Year 23 including students taking special course to complete their Totals 85 16 Γ6Ί Remits of Examinations In the Honours Examination students gained Second Class and Third Class In the Sc Special Examination student obtained First Class Second Class and Pass Degree equals 3rd Class Arts Six students registered at were awarded the Academic Diploma in Geography Higher Degree Sc Mr Linton
