xxiv ANNUAL REPORT Departmental Notes course of lectures providing an introduction to the study of Judseo- Spanish Language and Literature was given by the Honorary Lecturer in Judseo-Spanish Mr Ν Jopson The attendance was necessarily small but these lectures are departure of some interest in view of the increasing attention which is given to the high culture and philo- logically most interesting language of the Spanish-speaking Jews in the Balkans and in Turkey During the Easter Term the Department was happy to welcome Srta Maria de Maeztu the distinguished Spanish feminist pedagogue and philosopher She delivered four lectures in Spanish on Feminine Culture which were exceptionally well attended The University of London Spanish Society with its headquarters at King's College met regularly on Tuesdays and entertained number of distinguished guests who delivered short addresses Amongst them were the Spanish Ambassador the Ministers of Chile Mexico Panama and Nicaragua and Mr Cecil Jane who gave short lecture on the character of Columbus The Society also produced in Spanish Los Galeotes by the brothers Quintero which was performed on the stage of the London School of Economics under the management of Miss Perry who is also doing most admirable work as Secretary of the Anglo-Spanish Society The Head of the Department continued to act as adviser to the London County Council on matters connected with the teaching of Spanish and attended the Historical Congress at Barcelona in November 1929 as the representative of the University Department of Italian During the Session 16 students attended classes in the Department Elementary Intermediate 12 Two students entered and passed the Internal Intermediate Examina- tion Department of Portuguese There were students in the Department during the Session of whom were Post-graduates from other Departments engaged in research on subjects connected with Portuguese history Of these Mr Kimble is making translation into English of Duarte Pacheco's Esmeraldo Mr George West is proceeding to Portugal to gather material for work on Mickle poet and translator of the Lusiads while Mr Joseph Liddicoat is studying Anglo-French rivalry in Portugal from 1793 to 1807 The Professor delivered course of four public lectures on Portu- guese Voyages of Discovery and Empire-Building and represented the Lisbon Academy of Sciences at the meeting of the International Com- mittee of Historical Sciences at Cambridge and in London in April- May 1930
