xvi ANNUAL REPORT works in 61 volumes gift of about 100 books mainly connected with Slavonic Studies was made to the College by Mr Watts The Hon Vera Sanders as executrix of the late Miss Ε Sanders pre sented to the College collection of over 100 books dealing with religious life in France in the seventeenth century The Thomas Wall Trustees presented the sum of £100 for the estab- lishment of annual prizes for reading and elocution in the Department of Education Professor Smiles and Professor Allmand desiring to com- memorate the services rendered to the College and to chemical educa- tion by Professor John Millar Thomson founded medal in his name to be awarded for proficiency in Chemistry The generosity of Professor Gordon has also enabled the Delegacy to institute commemorative medal to be given annually to winners of the Tennant Prizes The Military Education Committee of the University have generously made grant of £20 towards the fitting up of the new Rifle Range which as indicated in last year's Report has been constructed beneath the new East Wing Lord Beauchamp Chancellor of the University presented to the College an etched portrait of himself portrait of Professor Maurice was presented by his grandson Professor Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice The Trustees of the St Mary-le-Strand Charity handed to the College on permanent loan large oil painting of Professor James Tennant who held the Chair of Geology from 1853 to 1869 and was also Trustee of the Charity Mr LI Atkinson who recently presented to the Institution of Electrical Engineers portrait of the late Professor James Clarke Maxwell painted by Mr Campbell presented to the College the study portrait made by the artist in preparation for the painting 11 Buildings and Accommodation In the last Report reference was made to the utilisation of the space rendered available in the old building on the occasion of the transfer to the new wing of the Departments of Geology Geography History Education Journalism and Classics in October 1929 All the pro- posals then outlined have been carried into effect with the result that the Library area has been increased by 30 per cent the new room being used as Science Library and Reading Room suite of rooms has been provided for the Department of French new Laboratory has been fitted up for Honours Botany students while the vacation of the old Laboratory has made it possible to extend the accommodation for Zoology and Physiology Other improvements include the pro- vision of new room for the Tutor to Women Students the laying of new floor in and the rearrangement of the lathe room in the Mechanical Engineering Workshop and the construction for the Department of Anatomy of new Mortuary
