ANNUAL REPOBT XV Committee With the aid of this Fund and with certain balances brought forward from the previous year and earmarked for special purposes it has been possible to carry out various improvements in accommodation including the Library extension the provision of additional Cloak Rooms for the Women Staff and students of new Honours Laboratory for the Department of Botany of considerable extension to the central heating system of new Mortuary for the Department of Anatomy of new room for the Tutor to Women Students and of considerable improvements in the Mechanical Engineering workshop The College was again able to make substantial provision for apparatus for the laboratories and spent £1 720 on this account of which £1 516 was provided out of revenue and the balance out of Endowment Funds and Donations The total income for the year amounted to £128 341 and the expenditure to £126 072 leaving credit balance of £2 269 which has been transferred to the Reconstruction Fund 10 Benefactions Lord Wakefield generously offered to continue for further two years from January 1st 1931 his donation of £350 per annum towards the maintenance of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies The American Telegraph and Telephone Company presented to the College some wireless material including battery worth about £75 and cathode-ray oscillograph worth about £30 being surplus equip- ment on the conclusion of experiments the Company have been carrying out in this country in connection with the Transatlantic telephone Mr Welbourn Engineer in Chief to British Insulated Cables Limited and former student of the College presented to the Depart- ment of Electrical Engineering very interesting sample of telephone cable which was laid in Calcutta in 1851 The Department also received some valuable apparatus from Mr Blake recent student of the College sample of high-tension three-phase cable from Messrs Siemens Brothers and Company Limited two useful and valuable instruments from Mr Lipman former student of the College in conjunction with Messrs Nalder Brothers and Thompson and Vox-Veritas loud-speaker from the Morogoro Trading Company The Kestner Evaporator and Engineering Company Limited through their Chairman and Managing Director Mr Arthur Reavell Chem presented to the College still of works pattern for use in the Chemical Engineering Laboratory The still was specially designed for the College for experimental purposes and is particularly adapted for research Its value is estimated to be about £250 Silical Water Softeners Limited presented to the College an 06 Water Softener for use in the Chemical Engineering Laboratory The Rev Professor Oesterley presented to the College Library valuable gift of about 190 volumes of works in various languages dealing mainly with history and including complete set of Ranke's
