Xli ANNUAL REPORT enable the advantages of the new Geography Department in the East Wing to be more satisfactorily utilised and will provide more oppor- tunities for the personal tuition and supervision of the now consider- able number of Geography students belonging to the Faculty of Arts At the suggestion of the Delegacy Standing Joint Committee of the College and the School has been set up to which all questions affecting co-ordination of Geographical teaching can be referred The proposals put forward by the College for the concentration of the University School of Journalism at King's did not meet with approval There is general agreement among all the Colleges con- cerned however that some change in the existing system is necessary and urgent In the meantime both the numbers and as the examina- tion results bear witness the quality of the Journalism Students seeking admission to the College are maintained The room set aside for the purpose in the East Wing has proved most useful addition begin- ning is now being made with its equipment as working library By the retirement of Mr Valentine Knapp from the Hon Directorship of the School of Journalism the College as well as the University will suffer severe loss To Mr Knapp's enthusiasm and unremitting interest is largely due the success which the scheme for the University Diploma in Journalism has now achieved The existing arrangements in the Department of Roumanian auto- matically lapsed at the end of the Session As result of negotiations with the representatives of the Roumanian Government reorganisa- tion was decided upon Of the former three lecturerships two will not for the present be renewed but lecturership in Roumanian will con- tinue to be held in the College by Dr Wickham Steed The question of future provision by the Roumanian Government of some more systematic teaching of Roumanian subjects by the creation of full- time academic post in the University was left open for discussion with the School of Slavonic and East European Studies to which it was felt such post would most appropriately be attached It was agreed however that the possible creation of such post should be without prejudice to Dr Wickham Steed's lectureship in the College The changes in the Faculty of Laws consequent upon the retirement of three part-time lecturers have made possible the appointment of full-time Reader in English Law This will enable the College to take more active part than hitherto in the day courses provided under the Intercollegiate Scheme of Law Teaching The provision for tutorial instruction for Law Students of the College has been increased but this may prove to need yet further development The hopes expressed in the Report last year with regard to Chemical Engineering have been realised the Senate has authorised the award of College Diploma and this has been recognised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers as exempting from their equivalent examination Experience is proving the usefulness of the course which is appreciated equally in the Departments of Chemistry and of Engineering special word of thanks is due to the Institution of Chemical Engineers and
