ANNUAL REPORT xi The Gilbart Lectures on Banking delivered at the College were attended by 200 000 persons there were 683 666 students in attendance at different Intercollegiate Lectures and the Preliminary Class was attended by 61 62 students exclusive of 42 41 students who attended the evening Preliminary Class arranged by the Theological Department Studies Six students in the Faculty of Arts compared with last year and including in the Department of English and External in the Department of French obtained First Class In the Faculty of Natural Science 20 students compared with 15 last year and including in the Department of Physics in that of Chemistry in Geography in Mathematics and in the General Examination were awarded First Class Six students in the Faculty of Engineering were placed in the First Class The total number of students in all Faculties except that of Theology who were awarded First Class was 32 compared with 31 last year An interesting and most successful experiment in international exchange was made during the Session by arrangements agreed between the College and the University of Basel Switzerland Professor Zickendraht visited the College in November and gave series of advanced technical lectures upon Wireless in Switzerlandu which were very much appreciated by an enthusiastic expert audience In return Professor Appleton visited Basel in January and there lectured on the most recent wireless researches carried on in the Wheatstone Laboratories In the ordinary work of the College while there is little of sensational novelty to report the year has been one of steady progress The con- tinued and successful activity both of staff and students is sufficiently indicated in the list of Distinctions on pp vii-x the list of books and papers published in the course of the year on pp xlv-lviii and in the Departmental Reports pp xix-xxxix Attention may here be drawn to number of improvements in the organisation of teaching Thanks to the co-operation of University College it has been found possible to establish Joint Readership in German which will add welcome strength to the philological side of German teaching in the College In the Departments of English and Geography the close and amicable co-operation with the London School of Economics has been main- tained In English Dr Η Routh has been appointed to Reader- ship held jointly in the College and the London School of Economics which has released its claim upon the services of Professor Reed on his appointment to succeed the late Sir Israel Gollancz as head of the Department In Geography the Staff of the College has been strengthened by the appointment with the concurrence of the London School of Economics of lecturer in historical Geography This will
