Vlll ANNUAL REPORT Professor Prestage was promoted by the Government of Portugal from the rank of Commander to that of Grand Officer in the Order of San Thiago He was also appointed to represent the Lisbon Academy of Sciences at the International Historical Congress held in this country in 1930 Professor Ε Appleton was appointed Chairman of the Propagation of Waves and Directional Wireless Committee of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Professor Hearnshaw was appointed Honorary Treasurer of the Royal Historical Society Vice-President of the Historical Associa- tion and Chairman of its Publication Committee Chairman of the Education Committee of the Victoria League and External Examiner in History to the University of Wales Professor Newton Organiser of the Imperial Studies Com- mittee of the Royal Empire Society Member of the Colonial Office Committee on the Education of the African Native Professor Claude Jenkins was appointed Select Preacher to the University of Cambridge Mr Hilary Jenkinson was appointed member of Special Committees of the Library Association and the Walpole Society Mr Ε Warmington was appointed Extension Lecturer on Ancient History at Gresham College Professor Gates was elected President of the Royal Micro- scopical Society and Recorder of the Section of Genetics and Cytology of the International Botanical Congress held at Cambridge in the summer 1930 Professor Gordon acted as Secretary of the Geological Society and served on the Council of that body and on the Council of the Palseontographical Society he was elected to the Council of the Linnean Society and to the Council of the British Association he was invited to give the Keith Lectures for the Royal Scottish Society of Arts he was also invited by the University of London to represent the University at the centenary celebrations of the French Geological Society Professor McDowall was awarded the Parkin Prize of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh for his work on the use of carbon compounds in medicine Professor Mackinnon was elected member of the Council of the Royal Microscopical Society Dr Lobban was appointed Technical Officer in charge of Steelwork Research for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Mr Cremer was appointed member of the Council of the Institution of Chemical Engineers Dr Brambell was appointed to the Chair of Zoology in the University College of North Wales Bangor Dr Brambell was also elected Vice-President of the Royal Microscopical Society during the Session
